I’ve reserved 3 adjacent campsites that we looked at; they will serve our needs perfectly. The campsites are on a bluff, overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and fittingly named “Rogues Harbor”. Each site has its own picnic table, fire ring, and flat ground for tents and bikes. There is a bathhouse less than 50 yards away, and a country store as you enter the park. I’ll have a 10x10 easy up tent on the center site to keep the sun or rain (hopefully not) at bay. The park rules will only let us put 6 people per campsite; right now we’re limited to 18 people. So if at all possible I would like people to RSVP when they know if they will be able to attend or not. This will let me know if I need to reserve more sites or cancel one of the site’s reservations. Directions: Take I-95 to exit 100, just South of Elkton, MD. As you exit merge onto Rt. 272 South. Follow 272 South, you will see a park headquarters on your right, ignore this one and go about ½ mile further and take the next entrance on your left (East). As you enter the park, there will be a guard house. If asked to stop, let them know you are with the Airheads Campout. Take the 1st right after the guard station and follow to “Elk loop” campground, it is almost to the end of the road on the right. Reserved sites are 139, 140 and 141. Points of interest include the Turkey Point lighthouse at the tip of Elk Neck State Park. You can’t ride the whole way, but there is a place to park and take a short hike to the light house. There are also plenty of nature trails throughout the campground, if the Zen of your motorcycle isn’t working and you want to hug a tree. Close by are some scenic routes to ride: The ride to the campground is considered a scenic road “The Old Turkey Point Road”. Then the “Lower Susquehanna River Tour”, this will take you from Rt. 40 up along the mouth of the Susquehanna River where it meets the Bay to Rt. 1, crossing and back down the other side of the river. The River Tour will tie into the “Atlantic to Appalachians” scenic route. These scenic byways of course are on the Maryland Scenic Byway Map. These maps can be picked up free at any Maryland welcome center. I will have a stack of these to pass out if anyone would like one. Friday evening I’ll be leading a dinner ride up the scenic Turkey Point Road to one of the several brewpubs on the historic main street of Charlestown. Saturday Night we’ll be grilling burgers & dogs, etc. The cost for 2 nights camping and dinner Saturday is $25.00, BYOB and C-gars. More information on the campground can be found at http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/elkneck.html Lance McKay (301) 362-6895
