RE: 85' 80RT exhaust flange damage | 32 Relevance | 3 years ago | James Strickland | Wrenching
There should be a die available somewhere to match this thread pitch. I do not own one myself. You might try contacting one of our advertisers to check in to a repair, or to find out what the thread pitch is. If I ever had that problem with a bike I owned, I would just pony up the dough to get the correct tool. That way, I would always have it, and might loan it to other members. There was some talk recently about compiling a tool loan list.

RE: Running rough at 3000 to 4000 rpm | 15 Relevance | 5 months ago | Richard W | Wrenching
Here's the difference, my friend... • Any good mechanic can set the carb balance by ear at idle. But you also need to set the balance by cable pull at ~2000 RPM. And for that you need the carb balance tool. I have the tool and you have the tool, but that is not the topic. The discussion is why the OP's mechanic seems not to have that same tool. A shop would be using that tool 2 or 3 times a week. • "Your dear old mechanic" was proabably remembering his dear old gasoline. I too have fond memories of those days and leaded gasoline. But gasoline has gone thr ...

I previously replaced my rear main seal using "regular' tools, but it doesn't seem to be holding - there's a little bit of oil dripping off the rear shelf. The oil pump cover can also leak causing this same result.

If anyone in the northern NJ area has the rear main seal puller/installer for post-1970 airheads, could I borrow it? To reciprocate, I have many of the other special tools from Cycle Works, and would be happy to lend them out. I'm not in need of any. I was trying to track down this rumor and determine if it is true, and it true, how our Colorado members might be able to take advantage of it.

You may be able to locate a "thread file" that can remove the small interfering bits down in the root of the threads much easier than locating said thread die. Thereafter, be sure and apply a product called Never-Seez or another anti-seize product. Metric Thread File Anti-Seize Product

RE: 1983 R100RS Tool Kit | 12 Relevance | 2 months ago | Steven Rankin | Parts is Parts
I would go with either your first or third option. I have not looked at the kit that Aerostitch sells so I could be wrong but, there is a good possibility your will be getting certain tools you won't need. Most of the newer non airhead BMW bikes switched from Allen style bolts to Torx (if that is the correct term) bolts. So many new kits will have a selection of Torx bits or sockets that you won't ever need and you may not get all the Allen stuff you do need. You may not get the box/combo wrench that fits the bigger steering head nuts as well as the tool ...
1983 R100RS Tool Kit | 12 Relevance | 2 months ago | Steven Shockley | Parts is Parts
My R100RS didn't have a tool kit when I bought it a few years ago. Since I was just riding local I never worried about it. Now I'm wanting to do some traveling and I'm looking at tool kit options. Should I look for an OEM tool kit (new or used), or possibly one of the ones that Aerostich sells? Should I just look at what the OEM kit had in it and assemble one myself? Any thoughts? Thanks, |
