Hi everyone,

1974 BMW R90S

I’m looking to do a full teardown and restoration, and while I want to do the heavy lifting myself, I’m looking for an experienced Airhead mentor in the Los Angeles / South Bay area to guide me through the process.

Being a '74, I know there are some year-specific nuances (the switchgear, the five-speed trans quirks, the Dell'Ortos) that I’d prefer not to learn the hard way. I’m a beginner. Never done this. I just need the 'Airhead wisdom' to ensure this classic stays period-correct and mechanically sound.

If you’ve restored an R90S before and wouldn't mind a 'student' looking to get their hands greasy, I’d love to connect. I’m happy to host at my place or bring the bike to you. Coffee, lunch, and deep appreciation provided.

I have been looking for better carburetors for 1970 BMW R60/5. It looks as thought the best choice is the Dual Mikuni VM28 carburetor kit (MPN:SMC-BMWr60) from SpeedMotoCo in Oregon. I have been told that this kit includes all the proper jets, needles and slide. I believe the throttle cables will also have to be replaced or modified somehow. The air intake tubes will have to modified in order to use the the existing BMW air-box setup to accommodate the new carbs. From what I can find with a Google search, these are the proper jets and adjustments...

Main Jet: #150-#160
Pilot Jet: #35-#40
Needle Jet: 159 P-8
Jet Needle: 5DP7
Slide: 2.5
Air Screw: 1-1.5 turns out from fully seated

I don't have good communication with SpeedMotoCo. Does anyone know of someone with these Mikuni VM28 carburetors on an R60/5 bike? A point in the right direction would be nice or a good photo of an R60 with the Mikuni VM28 carburetors on the bike. I have seen R75/5 airheads with this properly installed, but the the R60 is a different installation.

The following is information from Google AI...

"For a BMW R60/5, the most popular and highly recommended upgrade is a dual Mikuni VM28 carburetor kit, offering significantly better throttle response, easier starting, improved power, and stable tuning compared to the original Bings, though it requires proper tuning and potentially minor modifications for fitment. While original Bing carburetors can be rebuilt, the Mikuni conversion is considered a transformative upgrade for performance and reliability on these classic "airhead" BMWs."

Recently, I've decided to upgrade my /5's ignition system with an upgraded higher watt stator, new 3 ohm coil, higher voltage regulator, battery, and a more modern diode board.

What do you guys think of the aftermarket electronic ignition systems out there? Is there one that is better than the others? Or more reliable? I don't have an issue with points and condenser, but if switching to an electronic unit will increase the overall reliability or performance of the ignition system, I might be convinced to convert.

Thanks!

I have some symptoms of a bad coil and they are original. I'm upgrading the charging system, so I guess its a good time to do the coils.

Should I replace with Bosch "new blue" coils or go with a Dyna green?

And with that, can I get just one double coil?

My red light stays on at idle and it is the original alternator.

I was thinking of upgrading to the EDL4Li that they have since I already have a lithium ion battery (i didn't know that they don't work well with stock alternators.) Is this the right idea? Is there anything else that I need to take into consideration? I also still have points and condenser, but I did upgrade the diode board.
