I have an original 1973 R75/5 toaster tank with the panels currently removed, and the back of the chrome panels have thin clips attached, but there are no mating prongs or brackets on the tank itself. Was there another way to mount the panels without using the clips that I am not aware of?

Appreciate any info or help?

The short answer is no. The creative answer would be you might try some kind of adhesive. There is a tube caulk called "architectural silicone" that cures out to a kind of high density rubber and sticks to almost everything.. If you use an adhesive that could actually hold the toaster panel in place, I doubt that you would ever be able to remove it without wrecking the panel or paint on the tank.
