I’ve returned to riding now that I’ve retired, after not riding for many years. I’ve got my new Airhead now, and making a few upgrades.
I remember how much the stock seat hurt my butt on my previous R100/7. Fifteen years on, I have the typical Od Man Flat Azz Syndrome. So the problem is even worse. That is why I bought a used Russell Day Long today from an eBay seller, and I’ll soon be picking it up .
The new seat has no grab rail/ parcel shelf, my stock seat does. My questiin is : If I remove the seat from its’ current pan , transfer it to mine, will I be able to reinstall my grab rail? I want to keep it if possible. The seat I bought is from an 82 R100Rt, while my bike is an 84 R100RT. Thanks, Steve
If your Russel seat is built on a stock seat pan, the attachment brackets and weld nuts should be in place. If you have never seen a bare OEM seat pan, try to find a picture on the internet.

My understanding is that a Russel seat has additional structure under the cover and padding. I have never seen one opened up. Your OEM seat pan may not be adequate to carry the Russel seat without modification.

Thanks, James. I am going to ride from Mariposa.Ca, to Medford Or., retrieve it, and come home. I do want to transfer to my seat tailpiece, since it is painted to match. If I find out the grab rail has to be sacrificed, well,I won’t be too happy, but my azz needs to be happier than what it’s been on the stock seat!
In going through the records passed to me, I see that one of the previous owners had a new Corbin seat installed (did not come to me in the purchase), and a couple years later, removed. I am the 5th owner. I ‘d had a Corbin on my previous /7 and did the very same thing, returning to my stock seat after awhile. I determined then that I wanted a Russell Day-Long in the future , hope I’m not disappointed.
FOLLOW-UP : I’d hoped to be able to simply shift the seat from the stock cowl on my bike, but it didn’t work out that way, dimensions are different. I had to use the entire “new” seat assembly, which is shorter in length and without provision for the grab-rail/rack. Also, had to remove the rear storage box that fits below my seat cowl. Still, the seat is much more comfortable, but now has an ugly mis-colored cowl. However, the man I bought the bike from passed on some additional correct paint to respray, and I’ll get that done - eventually. Included is the correct base-coat, clear-coat, activator, and thinner.
