New to Air Heads and a new to me 1995 R 100 RT and trying to see what size fuses are supposed to be installed. Fuses 1 & 2 are lights ignition and such, fuse 3 is for optional equipment (radio). My bike currently has 15a in 1 & 2 and 20a in 3.

The owners manual that came with the bike is very vague about 8a, 10a, and 15a but doesn't say. Wiring diagram doesn't list sizes.

Haynes manual also no help because its a wide range of bikes.

Anyone have a reference for what's supposed to be installed where?

Thanks, Chuck

The stock OEM German fuse size is 7A for ignition and light positions on any Airhead, and 1A for most accessories like clocks, radios, phone charging and GPS. For heated grips and road lamps the general rule is to measure the draw with a meter and then double that current draw for the fuse size. For instance road lamps that required (say for instance) 2.6A might get a 5A fuse.

Fuse technology has come a long way since the 1990's. The "pointy-end" German fuses have all been totally replaced with the much more reliable "flat pack" style fuses, making the older style fuses very hard to find on a road trip. These plastic-bodied, color-coded, "flat pack" fuses are used universally in all modern cars.

On a '95 RT the 2 main fuses live in a small plastic box near the LH fuel tap. To use the more modern fuse, simply unplug the entire fuse box leaving 4 wires, each fitted with common 1/4" female spade terminals. It's a simple task to crimp four, hooded, 1/4" male spade terminals to the ends of 2 water-proof accessory fuse holders, like this....

In the flat-pack system, you'd need to install two cola-colored 8A fuses. The Green wire connects to Green/Blk, and the Gray wire plugs through to Gray/Blk. A simple, neat, easy way to double the reliability of your electrical system.

Hope this helps.

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.
