Time for coils?

Hey folks,

Question about coils? Mainly, should I replace them and with what?

Ignition is stock points and condenser, '73 R75/5.

I have some symptoms of a bad coil and they are original. I'm upgrading the charging system, so I guess its a good time to do the coils.

Should I replace with Bosch "new blue" coils or go with a Dyna green?

And with that, can I get just one double coil?

Thanks!

I can't think of a reason why a dual tower coil wouldn't work provided that it would be wired correctly with the points and condensor. I also own a 1973, R75/5, and the original coils on my bike are just fine. I have had trouble with plug wires and particularly the resistor caps and rubber boots at the spark plug end of the wires. The bike was cutting out in damp weather and sure enough, I found a ruptured rubber boot where the wire connects to the plug cap.  That would be something to think about if new coil(s) doesn't resolve your issue.

Faced with your choice options, I would go with Bosch.

@8053 Thanks for the info! Basically, I'm replacing everything else with the charging/ignition and was thinking maybe I should replace those as well.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

@wobbly Normally, I would agree with you. However, I got this bike from my cousin when he passed away. He was notoriously cheap and I'm finding a lot of ways that he cut corners with this bike. The coils on it look ancient and I wouldn't be surprised if he got them used for a sweet price. I've replaced a lot already. I'm just trying to decide which route to go with the coils. Rick from Mottorad recommended the Enduralast 3 ohm coil, so I might just go with that.

Rich is THE man on these type issues. So I can't argue with either of your logic.

I will say that ignition coil impedance is one of the largest factors in getting an electronic ignition to work properly. So you need to verify that 3 Ohms is compatible with whatever EI Rick is selling these days... just in case it comes to that. This might save having to buy yet another set... if an EI system becomes necessary next year.
