The left side cover is prevented from being removed by the grab handle. There are two allen bolts holding the handle on, but they appear to never have been removed since the factory. The rear bolt can be removed, but the front one is not loosening, and it holds part of the frame together. Any trick to getting the side cover off otherwise? If not, is there a safe way of loosening the allen bolt ?

The cover will go on and off without removing the handle. AS my mother used to say "You just have to hold your mouth right".
