Oak Grove Rendezvous Southern California

Event Details

In observance of the Covid 19 pandemic and the interest of the health & safety of others, the San Diego Tech Day that I have traditionally hosted in March will be cancelled.  But do not worry!  Airhead Bill Snee has come up with the great idea of a rendezvous at one of our favorite places:  U.S. Forest Service Oak Grove Campground!  This magical location sits in the foothills of the backcountry near the San Diego / Riverside County lines and is surrounded by a handful of exceptional wineries.  Not exactly a Tech Day – but a safe way to gather and to put some miles on our machines.
Rendezvous on Thursday March 18th at the Oak Grove Campground 95965 CA-79, Warner Springs, CA  92086 in campsites #14 & #15 which Bill has reserved for 3 nights.  This campground has always been very under-used and wide open but we all know how the popularity of camping has soared during the past years stay-at-home orders.  If you think you’d like your own space or that we’ll need more room then please go ahead and reserve an extra site or two.  The US Forest Service campgrounds are managed by volunteer hosts so the rules regarding bikes & tents per site are a bit loose.  The campground has paved roads & pit toilets.  No showers.  Water is on tap on a few random spigots.
This is a traditional rendezvous, no catering or amenities provided – just like minded people who happen to show up at the same place at the same time and bring all they need to stay warm, well fed, & hydrated.  There aren’t too many food options close by – The Stagecoach bar & grill may or may not be open for service, it’s about 10 miles down the road. www.stagecoachinnaguanga.com
Also nearby you’ll find a few of San Diego County’s best wineries:  Shadow Mountain, Sierra Roble, Hawk Watch (my fave) & Emerald Creek to name a few.  Hint – bring some cheese!   Corking a bottle of a nice syrah around the campfire could be almost as fun as replacing steering head bearings or lubing a spline!  It’s no Tech Day, but it’s something.
