So, I've got a 71 I picked up last year and wanted to get a new seat and possibly a tool box. But all of the diagrams show the bike having a seat that opens to the right side of the bike.
Mine, hinges at the back. Was there some made with both designs? Or do you think mine got modded?

On every Airhead I have owned, the seat hinges from the right side. I have never seen one with a modification that hinges from the rear.

Back in the 1970's and 80's all sorts of seat mods were made to make room for sidecars and extra tall transcontinental saddle bags. These were needed because a LOT of retired riders lived on their Airheads and were racking up unbelievable mileages. My own parents visited every province and state in North America, all of Europe, and Australia.... used up 4 brand new RT's in the process.... and they were low-mileage riders since they needed to be near their farm.

You're lucky. On my first RT, the seat lifted completely off the bike. There were no hinges !!

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.
