WHERE’S MY AIRMAIL?
Written by David Cushing
Monday, 02 January 2012
Did you move and not let the Airheads club know? Did you have your mail held while you were away and you were away for more than 60 days? Do you have another residence where you spend part of the year? The Airmail is sent out at a bulk periodical rate from the mailer on or about the 15th of each month. If you do not receive the issue by the end of the month, there could be a problem with your address in the continental U.S. Deliveries outside the continental U.S. will take longer. Prior to making the labels, the mailer runs the list through verification software provided by the U.S. Postal Service and this catches several address changes each month, but the information takes 60 days to make the next mailing list software update. Effective with this month’s issue, the non-delivery of a member’s Airmail will not be returned to McLean, VA as the returned costs for each issue has increased dramatically and more increases are expected with the postal service increase on January 24, 2012. As an active member, what can you do to minimize Airmail delivery problems? 1. If you are moving, please send a notice to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or by mail to Membership, PO Box 119, McLean, VA 22109 as soon as possible. You can include the date the move will be effective. The post office has postcards to notify publishers of the change. 2. If you will be “temporarily away” from your normal address, the local post office, if notified by you, will hold all mail for 60 days. If you are away any longer, they will only hold first class items and trash any other class of mail. Since the Airmail is sent at a periodical bulk rate, you will not get any more issues after 60 days unless you renew the temporarily away hold before the 60 days are up or return and cancel the hold before the 60 days are up. 3. If you have dual residences (such as summer/winter) the membership team has a procedure to make sure the Airmail will get to you at the proper residence when you are there. Just let us know what months you will be at each residence and the address. 4. If you fail to renew your membership by the end of your expiration month (noted on the address label), the Airmail will stop being sent to you. You would have also received a postcard a month prior alerting you to the ending of your membership. If any of these situations apply to you, be sure to contact the membership team at Membership, PO Box 119, McLean, VA 22101 or via e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it so you will not lose any issues of the Airmail. Thank you for your cooperation. The Membership Team

Airhead SuperTech
Written by Duck Koch
Tuesday, 06 December 2011
Feb 3 thru 5, 2012 Pennsylvania Airhead SuperTech (PA) The Pennsylvania Airheads will hold our SuperTech event again this winter in Boyertown, PA 19525 (about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia, PA). This will be a weekend filled with airhead tech sessions and multi-media expert advice and experience as well as some great camaraderie. Training sessions will cover how airhead systems and components work, how to maintain and overhaul them, how to get out of trouble on the side of the road and how to keep these great bikes safe and reliable. Sessions will mostly focus on the ‘later’ airheads from /5 through end of production. We will have our complete collection of component cutaways and demonstration units as well as some new cutaways and new session topics for 2012. We'll probably bring back some old favorites too. The very special guest, and keynote speaker at the Saturday night banquet, will be one of the best airhead mechanics and teachers on the East Coast, Bud Provin. Bud was born into a moto dealership family and played with wrenches on beemers and old British iron before he could walk. He has wrenched, ridden and taught about beemers in numerous places and was, at one time the senior technican at Bob's BMW in Maryland. A few years ago he moved back to Vermont to reopen his Grandfather's original business; The Nickwackett Garage near Rutland, VT http://thenickwackettgarage.com/bmw/ He is a great giver and a great guy who loves BMW Airheads and he will bring his experiences, his wisdom and his knowledge to Boyertown this year. Imagine – leaving Vermont in February to go south! We are excited for the opportunity to learn from him and to get to know him. We will gather for lies and tire kicking on Friday night for those arriving early and the tech sessions will begin at 8:00am on Saturday morning, running all morning. We’ll bring in lunch then finish the teaching day around 5pm. The banquet dinner that evening will start around 6:00 for tire kicking time with Bub and the other instructors, then dinner, foolishness and a fascinating presentation. Sessions will begin again Sunday morning and activities will conclude by noon so everyone will be able to travel home that afternoon. This will be a unique opportunity to get valuable maintenance, trouble shooting and restoration knowledge and to defeat the winter doldrums and PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome). Great info, great camaraderie and great time with world famous airhead experts. Our goal is to maximize the value and access to the instructors for those attending so only 60 slots are available for SuperTech. Attendance is on a pre-registration basis only. Fees for the weekend will be: $112 for Airheads Beemer Club members and $132 for non-members. Fee includes all tech sessions, coffee and donuts each morning, Saturday lunch and the banquet dinner. Limited seating is available for spouses at the banquet for an additional $32 per head. (A very nice affair and there are many things for spouses to do here in Pennsylvania while you are at the Tech sessions). In past years we have had numerous spouses join us Saturday evening. Registration opens December 1st, 2011. Send a check for the total amount made out to Robert Sipp at 2188 Johnston Ave, Bethlehem, PA 18015. Please include, typed on a separate sheet, your name, address, phone number, email address and ABC membership number to facilitate contacting you with further details. Bob can be reached at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it if needed, but only received checks will count. It’s only fair to everyone. Once the max participant number is reached we will hold further checks on a standby list and return them after the weekend has completed. We have always gone to the standby list so its worth the wait. We will be supplying further details regarding motel and airport info, maps, schedules and driving directions to folks after they register. Please do not drag your feet on this one. This event has sold out quickly in past years and slots may again fill up fast. We look forward to seeing you there and having a great weekend together.

Forums and E-mail lists

Members often ask, "Where is the Airheads forum?"

While the club does not have a separate forum specifically, there are a couple of places where one can go to seek or share knowledge about airheads.

The first one that comes to mind is the airheads e-mail list. http://micapeak.com/mailman/listinfo/airheads  This list is part of the MicaPeak family of e-mail lists and forums. This is a subscription list and you must be approved by the list moderators but you do not have to be a member of the ABC. (Although we encourage you to join!) There are many professional people on this list who regularly share their knowledge about our machines. Additionally, this list is a good way to keep up with events and happenings around the country. For more information about airheads mail lists click here https://www.airheads.org/content/view/21/46/

Another excellent resource is the Boxerworks forum. http://boxerworks.com/forum/ Boxerworks has several sections that include not only our airheads but also older BMW's, a photo sharing page, a swap meet section, and some general motorcycling info pages. This forum is also populated by many people who know their stuff when it comes to BMW motorcycles. You must register to post but reading is open to all.

A more specific forum is the Adventure Riders http://www.advrider.com/ This is an all brand site but includes a lot of info about GS/ST/GS-PD machines and, as the name implies, adventure riding. Sections of this forum include riding, bikes, and gear. The Hall of Wisdom contains some very useful info on several different makes of machines. You don't have to register but it helps for searching and posting.

The BMW Motorcycle Owners of America forum is specific to BMW's. http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/  Lots of info to be found here in many sections! You may have to register to post but you can read all you want without doing so. BTW, you may want to join the BMWMOA.  They have a very nice magazine and sponsor a national rally every year. There are also other membership benefits in which you may be interested.

A couple of states have email lists for items that pertain to club activities in those states. Contact your Airmarshal for information or to encourage the starting of an e-mail list for your state.

I'm sure there are other forums and e-mail lsts that could be included here.  I just wanted to share some of those I'm aware of. Please e-mail me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it if you have a forum or list that you think could be helpful for keeping our old machines on the road or making new friends.

Please note that the ABC does not endorse the information available through any forum or e-mail list and encourages you to verify the advisability of any ideas with a professional before trying them out.
