15k miles ago had a full level 2 service done, changing all my fluids today and 1/2 dozen little metal fragment and filings found on magnetic plug, no unusual sounds noticed on driving the bike to warm it up. are we talking sure demise here or it's just gettin old 1983 r100rt

Short answer... time for a rebuild.
Rubber Chicken Garage is always a good choice although there are also several others.

I'd appreciate hearing what the shop finds when you get her back.

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.

I talked to Dave Alquest, Az. airmarshall and owner of Quality cycle and per his advise ,spun the wheel and listened with my stethoscope and heard nothing however there is a clunk when I make short quick engagments with the drive shaft. His advise, you won't know till you break her down. thanks admin. for moving me I'll do better next time. I'll let you know what turns up.

Took my final drive off and disassembled it, the gears in there are huge and in good shape. the metal pieces were from a spacer behind a bearing on the input spline. don't know why it broke up, but no other apparent damage to anything. the bearing sounds rough so all bearings will be replaced. glad it wasn't worse. For a good look into the final drive, go to Bob's BMW site, go to the micro fish and look up your year and model bike. The exploded view was very helpful.
