The bike is a 1983 R80RT, manf. date January 1983. The problem is getting the guide ring off so I can replace the o-ring behind the clutch carrier (flywheel).

This "guide ring" 5 hole metal cup with the oring inside is not budging. Tried propane torch heat and 2 prybars in several iterations. Tried Liquid Wrench to soften it up. Tried heat then vice grips wiggle more than once. No luck, not budging. Does anyone know where I can borrow the special tool to pull this bugger? Or where I can buy it?

The other odd thing is the rear main oil seal in this photo. It is steel on the rear face. USA is stamped in it along with 530389 and CR and 80-100-10. I have done several of these oil seal replacements and have never seen one with a steel face. I am also wondering about the USA label. I also have never had this much trouble trying to remove the guide ring. The seal was leaking badly, lots of oil has been cleaned up. Approximately 40,000 miles on the bike.

Any help would be appreciated.

The seal was changed. The new seal need some preshaping IIRC.

Consult your airmarshal to see what is in the tool pool.

Cycleworks is a source or specialty tools.

You do have the crank blocked with the flywheel off, right?.

Sounds as if the seal came from Capitol Cycle. They are always trying to find cheaper substitute parts.

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.

The final solution:  bought a special tool to pull the guide ring.  Installed new oring and new oil seal.  Success.
